Peachtree Corners Curiosity Lab Tour

Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners is a publicly funded living lab designed to provide a real-world test environment to advance next-generation intelligent mobility and smart city technology. Located within a 500-acre technology park where 7500 people work and more than 1000 people live, Curiosity Lab provides unique infrastructure and a supportive government to facilitate innovation. Early-stage startups, universities, and established companies are all welcome to join our innovation ecosystem.

The Lab includes a 5G-enabled 3-mile autonomous vehicle test track and smart city laboratory within an existing 500-acre technology park where thousands of people and vehicles interact with the track and its technology every day. It includes a Fiber Optic network, DSRC, video surveillance, a 3-way traffic signal, track mapping, network operations center, lidar traffic & pedestrian detection, and a variety of other emerging technologies.

This SE ITS Summit event will provide an opportunity to see the Curiosity Lab firsthand, and the Innovation Center will host everyone for an informative history review, an innovative plan for its future, and an update on all of the current happenings in the Lab. Guests will hear from the City’s Chief Technology Officer & Infrastructure Manager, and they will have the opportunity to tour the Innovation Center, the Network Operations Center, and visit some of the partners’ spaces inside the Center.

iATL Lab Tour

The Infrastructure Automotive Technology Laboratory, iATL™, is the world’s first facility designed to bring together automakers, cellular network operators, traffic technology companies, semiconductor manufacturers, and Departments of Transportation to develop connected vehicle applications. The primary function of the iATL is to serve as an engineering technical facility for testing connected vehicle application functionality and performance between the transportation infrastructure and motor vehicles, the infrastructure and vulnerable road users, motor vehicles and vulnerable road users, and other configurations.

This SE ITS Summit event will provide an opportunity to see the iATL Lab and see how see how traffic engineers remotely monitor and control traffic control devices using a smartphone application. The tour will also feature a in-vehicle demo of the smartphone application, communication over the existing cellular network (C-V2X network, Uu), illustrating the current capabilities of connected vehicle technology utilizing the technology readily available today. The demo will also demonstrate the future capabilities of connected vehicle technology as a result of the widespread of C-V2X RSUs (roadside units) and OBUs (on-board units).

North Ave Corridor/BeltLine Tour

Tour Capacity: 50 people

The group will be divided into two topics with each half of the group spending 30 minutes on each topic and swapping midway.

The North Avenue Corridor tour will cover the pilot Smart Atlanta project that was completed in September 2019.  There are approximately 50 intersections outfitted with pre-emption technology hardware, in-vehicle units were installed for two fire stations and six emergency vehicles and managed by a cloud-based technology system. There will be a discussion of the project management and implementation and extensive coordination that was required for this project. Jose Pagan-Otero is helping lead this activity and discuss future plans.

The BeltLine tour will provide a walking tour and overview of the permanent trail counter systems, security cameras that are tied into the Atlanta Police Department Video Integration Center (VIC), and the fiber optic duct bank. The tour will also include an overview of the planning, design, and construction of the BeltLine as a “street without cars”. The progress of the BeltLine Streetcar planning will be covered as well as the adjacent land development/reuse along the BeltLine. Shaun Green from the Atlanta BeltLine is helping lead this activity.
